New Funding Initiative to Help Strengthen Human Services

An innovative public private partnership that will enable us to strengthen our services to thousands of needy Chelsea residents was announced at a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, November 13. Key public officials joined more than 100 guests as we announced a new 25-year agreement with the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) and launched our $10 million "Community Works!" campaign.

At a time when the availability of funding for community-based human services is particularly scarce, the agreement with NYCHA enables us to remain in our largest site at 441 West 26th Street, renovate our facilities and expand our services to meet growing needs. The public and private funding initiative will set in motion a key effort to continue to provide the programs and services that have become indispensable to thousands of Chelsea residents.

Our new "Community Works!" comprehensive capital campaign -- a $10 million, three year fundraising effort -- will enable us to make the renovations and ensure that our facility will be well-maintained and provide vital program support. To date, we have received commitments of almost $5 million in public and private funds.

Chelsea's oldest and only comprehensive community center, Hudson Guild helps more people who live or work in the area than any other nonprofit organization through childcare and early education programs, youth development, mental health, arts, recreational, senior programs, community building, advocacy and other programs and services.

Renovations are scheduled to begin by the end of November 2003 and will last approximately one year. During that time, our programs will take place in various temporary spaces as well as in our four other neighborhood sites.
