Opening Reception: The Disappearing City
This public art project produced by More Art and led by Amy Wilson, will use quilt-making to encourage long-time elderly residents to engage with their past through the lens of gentrification. Each senior will produce a quilted work, approximately 36 x 36 inches in size, commemorating a memory of New York City during which the city played a large part in their lives. Using embroidery and appliqué, they will work on the imagery, blocking out the main elements with pieces of fabrics and embroidering the details. The last part of the workshop will be dedicated to turning these “fabric drawings” into quilts by stitching through stuffing and a second layer of fabric. At the end of the exhibit, each senior will retrieve his or her quilt, which can be repurposed as an children playmat, and will become part of their family legacy.
